going over the cliff. it's hard to tell. the expectation, even if we go over the fiscal cliff. right now, congress is still looking at trying to resolve this here in the next few days. so it's not as if we go over the cliff and stay there. there would be time to resolve the issue. that being said, we saw a whirlwind of negotiating on capitol hill. and right now, after things sort of didn't work out between mitch mcconnle and harry reid, the top republican and top democrat in the senate, they have shifted between mitch mcconnell and vice president joe biden. that's where all of the action is right now. keeping the speaker of the house john boehner abreast of what's going on. keeping harry reid abreast of what's going on and keeping president obama abreast of what's going on. we heard from senator reid yesterday that they are very far apart. not just talking on the threshold, initially president obama said $250 mi,000. there is talk to bumping that to $400,000. republicans want to know how we pay for it. there are farm subsidies, the doc fix. and spending cuts. so there is a lot to be resolved here in the next few hours. >> too bad we only found out about this,

if, as jessica said, the oddsmakers are definitely seeing the fiscal cliff happening, us going over the fiscal cliff, but if senate does pass something, that would be the next move, then the house could pretty easily take it up and pass it on sunday night or monday morning, on the actual day of december 31st. i think at this point, it's more of a question of optics, and democrats were definitely trying to take advantage today of the fact that the house republican -- the republican-led house, rather, is not here and won't be here until sunday. we all know that what happens here in washington, is that nothing really happens until they're really up against the deadline. that's why i'm also told by some democrats who really know what the process is going to be, if there is one, that they don't even see this potentially happening, if there is any kind of legislation that goes before december 31st, until probably that day, december 31st, because the pressure will have to be on to get enough republicans in the house and the senate, to pass this. >> right up to the edge. thank you, dana. thank you, jessica. now, right now, the most likely deal on the table seems to be t

29th, on friday. if they go over the fiscal cliff, they don't have an extension of unemployment insurance benefits for the long-term unemployed, that's it. 2 million people about, their last check was on friday. they will not get a check next week. another 1 million will run out in the coming weeks and months, once they run out of their original state benefits of 26 weeks. the long life te-term unemploye get hit first. also, folks, if they do do a deal on tax rates, looks like it's not included in any of these negotiations. that means you're going to see taxes going up f. the payroll tax withheld will rise from 4.2% to 6.2%. early tax refunds will likely be delayed. you wouldn't have the money to pay off the credit card bills from christmas. that could be the problem. and long-term unemployed benefits expire. for families, four different tax breaks on the line here. probably scaled back. the child tax credit is one of them. you've got several of them that are so important to, especially low income families. childcare and dependent tax credit. earned income tax credit. and the american opportunity tax credit, part of the stimulus the president pushed through in 2009. that's a tax credit for people sending kids through college. t

begins in just a minute. i'm candy crowley in washington with the latest on the fiscal cliff negotiations. there was a big meeting at the white house today between the president and the four leaders, two republicans and two democrats on capitol hill. senator harry reid told reporters afterwards that the next 24 hours would be very important, as he and republican leader mitch mcconnell try to put together something that would pass both of their caucuses, that republicans in the senate would vote for and that democrats in the senate would vote for. and then, of course, it would have to go to the house. now, the majority leader senator reid said he's readying a bill for a vote on monday to prevent a tax hike on incomes up to $250,000. senator reid said his bill will include all of the additional provisions that the president outlined that include long-term unemployment benefits, a continuation of those. that would be sort of the plan b for democrats simply because what they would rather do is get a bill with senator reid working in conjunction with senator mcconnell. senator reid said he's awaiting good faith proposals from the republicans. president obama said after the meeting that he is modestly optimistic a deal can be reached, but as you can hear from senator reid, the president asked that
